Heatiness Syndrome
The Causes
‘Heatiness’ is a concept most Singaporeans are familiar with. Indeed, most people have equated ‘heatiness’ to that sensation of ‘heat’ they’re experiencing – feelings of irritability, rapid pulse, constipation, flushed face or cheeks, urine that is concentrated or yellow, sore throat, etc.
However, the way Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views it, you don’t become ‘heaty’ just by taking ‘heaty’ food. Instead, ‘heatiness’ arises when other factors like the kind of lifestyle you’re leading and the weather that you’re exposed to come into play.
- The inherent body constitution of Yang excess
- Deficiency in function of one or some of the body systems resulting in a relative excess of internal heat
- External weather or seasonal conditions of external heat
- Lifestyle factors such as over-exertion, insufficiency of rest or stress
- Imbalanced diet
